About Us

GetGear.org was the brainchild of a young brother, Jacob, and sister, Amaya, who had the opportunity to travel with their parents to countries in Africa and Latin America.

In each country, the two found soccer fields and local children willing to play with them, but they were struck by the lack of proper equipment in every country...especially in comparison to what they had back home.

GetGear.org started in 2009 to address this inequity in areas of poverty at home and abroad.

The importance of sports for kids

·        Team sports encourage collaboration, fitness and social responsibility, but participation has been declining for decades.1

·         Children involved in sports report higher self-esteem and are rated by teachers as more socially competent and less shy and withdrawn. And, kids who play sports are less likely to drop out of school, less likely to take drugs and less likely to become teen parents. 2

·         Childhood obesity is an epidemic in the U.S. more than  tripled from 1980 to 2002. 16% of children were overweight or obese (9 million children) and another 15% were considered at risk of becoming overweight. 3

·         In the developing world, children are desperate to play sports but often don’t have the most basic equipment.

·         GetGear.org believes that children everywhere should have equal opportunities to attend school, to have food on the table and to play sports.
